Missing teeth can affect not only your smile but also your overall oral health and functionality. A dental bridge is a reliable and effective solution for replacing one or more missing teeth, helping to restore your smile, improve your bite, and maintain the alignment of your remaining teeth.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a prosthetic device used to fill the gap created by one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) supported by dental crowns placed on the adjacent natural teeth or implants. The bridge “bridges” the gap, providing a seamless and natural-looking replacement for the missing teeth.

Types of Dental Bridges:

  1. Traditional Bridge: The most common type, where crowns are placed on the teeth adjacent to the gap (abutment teeth) and a pontic is secured in the middle. This type is ideal if the adjacent teeth are healthy and strong enough to support the bridge.

  2. Cantilever Bridge: Used when there are adjacent teeth on only one side of the gap. A cantilever bridge is anchored to a single abutment tooth, making it suitable for areas of the mouth where there is less stress on the bridge.

  3. Maryland Bridge (Resin-Bonded Bridge): This type uses a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth. It is often used for replacing front teeth and requires less alteration of the adjacent teeth.

  4. Implant-Supported Bridge: Instead of relying on natural teeth, this bridge is supported by dental implants placed in the jawbone. It is a great option for replacing multiple missing teeth and offers enhanced stability and durability.

Benefits of Dental Bridges:

  • Restores Functionality: Bridges restore the ability to chew and speak comfortably, which can be affected by missing teeth.
  • Improves Aesthetics: Bridges provide a natural-looking replacement, enhancing your smile and overall appearance.
  • Prevents Teeth Shifting: By filling the gap left by missing teeth, bridges help prevent adjacent teeth from shifting out of alignment, which can lead to bite issues and further dental problems.
  • Durable and Long-Lasting: With proper care, dental bridges can last many years, offering a durable solution for tooth replacement.

The Bridge Procedure:

  1. Consultation & Examination: During your initial visit, we will assess your oral health, discuss your needs, and determine the best type of bridge for you. We may take X-rays and impressions of your teeth.
  2. Preparation: The adjacent teeth (abutment teeth) are prepared by removing a small amount of enamel to allow space for the crowns. Impressions are taken to create a custom-made bridge.
  3. Temporary Bridge: A temporary bridge is placed to protect the prepared teeth and fill the gap while your permanent bridge is being crafted.
  4. Fitting the Permanent Bridge: Once your permanent bridge is ready, it is carefully fitted and adjusted to ensure a perfect fit. The bridge is then cemented into place.
